Tower of David
Tower of David: Museum Of The History Of Jerusalem "Migdal David"
Jaffa Gate at the entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem, 02-626-5333.
The Tower of David Museum of the History of Jerusalem is located in the medieval citadel known as the Tower of David, near the JaffaGate, the historic entrance to the Old City. The Museum presents Jerusalem’s story. It details the major events in its history beginning with the first evidence of a city in Jerusalem in the second millennium BCE, until the city became the capital of the State of Israel, as well as its significance to three religions.
Children love to walk around the Citadel and the fortress and hear the stories of Jerusalem’s history; envisioning the old moat, draw bridge and tower. They can see a 360 degree view of Jerusalem when they climb the tower. The Museum has special children’s activities including treasure hunts and exhibitions. The Museum also hosts the Night Spectacular sound and light show each evening.
Temporary Exhibit: "The Kaiser is Coming! Breaking News: Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany visits Jerusalem" See the new temporary exhibit of pictures from 1898 when kaiser Wilhelm visited the Old City. The exhibition will focus on the royal visit through the lens of journalism and media. It will highlight the complex preparations, the difficult journey, the lavish receptions, the public accolades, the formal occasions, the visit to the Temple Mount and the laying of cornerstones in his presence. The exhibition will explore the question of why so many journalists covered the visit and why so many inhabitants came out for the occasion.
Opening Date: Monday, October 29, 2012 (exactly 114 years since the historic visit!)
Closing date: End of March 2013.
