Fridays at Ein Yael

There are a variety of special activities for the entire family on Fridays at Ein Yael.

The Ein Yael Living Museum offer families a choice of workshops to teach them about ancient agricultural methods and life in Israel during the Roman Period.

Ein Yael is nestled in the enchanting Jerusalem Hills on the outskirts of Jerusalem among terraces, orchards and natural springs. In the heart of nature, Ein Yael brings the past back to life with ancient artisan workshops.

Guided Tour

You will be guided through the archeological site and learn about the ancient Roman villa, the mosaic floor and other ancient finds. On the reconstructed Roman road you will visit artisan shops just as they would have been during the Roman time period.


The workshops in Ein Yael take place along the terraces on the surrounding hills of the museum. All the workshops are run by experienced and trained guides who will demonstrate the techniques and then help the participants create their own artwork.

Introduces different clay vessels which were used in ancient times. Describes how clay is extracted from the soil. Pottery is created on a potter’s wheel using different techniques.

Paint on moist plaster using mineral pigments and natural colors just as the Romans did many years ago.

Learn how to cut stones with a hammer and chisel, design an image and set the stones on cement to create the mosaic piece.

Introduces all stages of weaving, from wool preparation, cleaning, twining and coloring. Weaving rugs using different techniques with various types of loom.

Pita Bread Baking
Use flour, water, olive oil and spices. Mix, knead and bake pita bread on a bonfire.

Musical Instruments
Learn about ancient musical instruments and the musicians who played them. Make flutes from branches of the “Bamboo” tree.

Natural Building
Introduces different ancient building methods made from natural materials – mud.

Weaving Baskets
Baskets were the most ancient form of carrier. Experience weaving baskets from reeds and learn about other plants that can be used for weaving.

Spices Workshop
Learn about olive oil and its various uses in ancient times as an herb and perfume . Each participant will prepare a vial of perfume from local plants.

Gardening Workshop
We will learn about the importance of recycling and the plants that grow in Israel, their uses and the differences between them. Each participant will prepare a personal sapling that he/she will take home and learn how to take care of.
