The Open Studio Art Chug

During chugim at The Open Studio, children can design and create their own art explorations. All chugim will be run in an English speaking environment giving children the added opportunity to reflect, and learn how to communicate with others in English around their creative process. Non-English speakers are welcome!

Open Studio Little Guys – Gan Hova to Grade 1 (flexible): English & Hebrew

The workshop is process art oriented and aimed art exposing children to many different medium, allowing them to get messy, manipulate different materials, make choices regarding their artwork and create opportunities for self-reflection and cooperative experiences. Different medium will be introduced via 2-3 stations each week and children will be free to move through the stations at their own pace, or linger at one. Throughout the year, more materials will be added to stations and I will be customized based on the interests of the children. On a typical week, the stations might be:

  • An individually focused station such as self portraits utilizing painting, drawing or collage materials (charcoal, watercolors, oil pastels, gouache paints, magazines, clay, etc.)
  • A fine motor based activity such as sewing, weaving or sculpture
  • A sculpture or manipulative activity (clay, fimo, plastalina, salt dough, etc) designed to strengthen hand muscles, hand/eye coordination & motor skills
  • A messy option encouraging free play, engagement of different materials, and more gross motor manipulation such as 3D paints, mud paints, paper making, slime, finger painting, oobleck, etc.
  • Following the Jewish year, we will offer projects such as making Hanukkiot, Mishloach manot, Havdallah sets, etc.

ArtBC’s (Baking & Art, the Literary Skills Way) – Gan Hova to Grade 1 (flexible): English only!

We will work our way through the English alphabet, learning how to form and recognize letters as they build upon each other. Children will create their own dictionaries including their artwork, photos and recipes to take home at the end of the year. In addition to working in and hearing English, they will develop literacy skills, hone their fine motor skills such as cutting, drawing and painting, make choices about their artwork and engage in open-ended process art. We will start with A is for Apple Cake and Apple Prints, then move onto B is for butterflies, C is for carrot cake, D is art with dots, S is for Slime and so on. Parents are welcome to join in and lend a hand (*but are not required to do so).

Open Studio – Grades 2-5 (flexible): English & Hebrew

The workshop is process art oriented and children will make their own choices regarding medium. Different medium will be introduced via 3-4 stations each week and children will be free to move through the stations at their own pace, or linger. The stations will stay the same for a couple of weeks and reappear throughout the year to give children the change to reflect on their own growth and process. Thoughout the year, more materials will be added to stations and I willbe customized based on the interests of the children. On a typical week, stations might include:

  • A painting or drawing activity (charcoal, watercolors, oil pastels, acrylic paints, etc.) using sketchbooks, various papers, canvas, etc.
  • A sculpture or manipulative activity (clay, fimo, plastalina, salt dough, etc)
  • A fabrics or craft option such as shrinky dinks, fuse beads, wood staining, glass painting, mosaics, etc.
  • Surrounding different holidays there will also be holiday specific options, such as making Hanukkiot, Purim costumes, Havdallah sets, etc.

Open Studio Masters – Grades 6-9 (flexible): English & Hebrew

This workshop is process art oriented and open ended. It is designed to allow older children to work in their preferred medium while also creating a non-competitive space encouraging them to reach outside of their comfort zones and explore new medium. The first 20 minutes of each session will be an “Art Meditation” where a different medium will be out on the table and participants come in and silently work using whatever is placed on the table, be it clay, watercolors, charcoal, paper collage, fabrics, etc. Then a new medium will be demonstrated for about 10 minutes. The remaining hour will be dedicated to the students’ choices of medium. They are welcome to choose various medium or linger with one throughout the session. As the year progresses, various art forms will be available such as

  • machine sewing
  • glass painting
  • mosaics
  • working in polymer clay
  • painting in large and small
  • plaster of paris and
  • papercutting.

Opportunities will also be given to create objects surrounding the Jewish year and life in Israel such as Hanukkiot, Purim costumes, Seder Plates, Havdallah sets, mezuzot, tzedekkah boxes and more.
