Lighthouse: A celebration of Summer at the National Library of Israel

Between winter and summer, darkness to brightness, despair to hope, “Lighthouse” returns for the third time! For one night, the National Library will be filled with a variety of eye-opening and heart-expanding performances, talks, workshops, tours and surprises. You are invited to wander among them and treasure your own “Lighthouse” moments.

5pm:  “We Will Pass Through Darkness and Light” | Dr. Moti Zeira on Light and Darkness in Hebrew Music (Seminar Rooms, 2nd Floor)

Light and darkness, day and night, star in many songs in Hebrew music throughout its generations. Sometimes they are just a factual description of the degree of lighting or the time of day, but sometimes they hold a whole world of meanings, stories, cultural and historical layers. Follow these songs, the stories behind them and the meanings they symbolize. Lecturer: Dr. Moti Zeira, historian and writer, researcher of Israeli culture and Hebrew singer

5pm: Spring Tour of the National Library and Visit to the Exhibition (Departure Point: Lobby, Floor 0, Kaplan Entrance)

A spring tour that begins in the magnificent National Library Garden and ends with the flower exhibition. Learn about the landscape architecture of the library’s residence and the selection of vegetation planted in the garden – among the seven species of trees, spice bushes and perennial plants. From there, visit the exhibition “There Are Flowers: Between the Pages of the National Library” and encounter rare items from the library’s collections, which bring to light the place of flowers in local history: in beautiful botanical illustrations, manuscripts for stories and poems, Hebrew music, posters, studies and non-fiction books.

6.15pm: “What Will a Man Do to Renew Himself?” | Balah Ben-Eliyahu on Love Between the Suns in the Novel “Singing” by S.Y. Agnon (Seminar Rooms, 2nd Floor)

Manfred Herbst, a lecturer in Byzantine history at the Hebrew University, vacillates between his life as a husband and family man and his passion for a woman he met – her name is Shira – who embodies for him the heart-warming renewal of the forces of life and creation. The monumental novel “Singing”, one of S.Y. Agnon’s masterpieces, is at the center of the meeting at the National Library in Jerusalem – not far from where the plot takes place. The alternation of day and night, the change of seasons, the hour between the suns – is revealed in this work as metaphors that weave the plot and express the movement that takes place in it, between feelings of fatigue and depletion and experiences of renewed awakening. 6.15pm & 10pm: Distilled Creation: Alcohol Tasting Workshop from Julius Distillery (Harry’s Cafe, Floor 0)

Right now, when nature is in all its glory, with a variety of colors and scents, Yuval, founder and chief distiller of the fine northern Julius Distillery, will be at the National Library to lead an alcohol tasting workshop based entirely on the purity of local raw materials. Fruit distillates, honey, and herbal infusions will transform matter into spirit and spirit into liquid. Get ready to taste and fall in love.

8pm: Wandering Strip: Zohar in the Dark: Guided Study in the Book of Zohar (Ilona and Hillel Zvi Lauy Rare Collections Reading Room, 3rd Floor)

From the depths of the library and from the darkness, we will briefly touch upon the occult. Olesh Goldberg, in a guided study in the Book of Zohar to the light that emerges at the edge of the night and sparkles from the darkness. Moderator: Olesh Goldberg, teacher at Mamboa, Matan, Beit Avichai and part of the team of the “Zohar Chai” Beit Midrash

8.15pm,9pm, 9.45pm and 10.30pm: “What’s this doing here?” The National Library’s Collection of Strange Items (Meeting point: 3rd floor, synagogue entrance hall)

This year, we’ve dug into the library archives again and brought out for you some of the most surprising, strange and special items you didn’t know were kept with us, and each one has an interesting story to tell. A jewelry box, a Maglev, a pair of glasses and an ostrich egg are just some of what awaits you in the display that was set up especially for this evening. Moderator: Noa Reichman, librarian at the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People.

8.15pm: Instagram Killed the Video Stars – MTV Funeral Service (Younes and Soraya Nazarian Library Experience Center, Floor 0)

In 1981, a revolution took place. MTV went on the air and changed the world of music, and the entire popular culture. 45 years later, the channel took its last breaths – but the ripples of the revolution are still here. Four participants chose the music video that changed their lives, influenced their careers or scarred them forever. Together we watched, laughed, shed tears and embraced the channel that raised an entire generation. Participants: Guy Mazig, Eden Harel, Tess Hashiloni, Itay Ben Simhon

8.30pm: OPENING PERFORMANCE: Asaf Amdursky: Silent Engines (David Geffen Auditorium, Floor 0)

For almost three decades, “Silent Engines,” Assaf Amdursky’s iconic album, has accompanied Israelis a soundtrack to life. Now, Amdursky comes to the National Library to open Migdalor #3 with all the favorite songs and a special guest: Hila Ruch. Ohad Kosky – Guitar | Shlomi Maya – Keyboards | Stella Gottstein – Guitar and Keyboards | Uri Kutner – Bass | Tal Cohen – Drums

8.30pm: י-Roa – with Galit Hogi and Dor Kahan (Seminar Rooms, 2nd Floor)

Galit Hogi and Dor Kahan will remain optimistic no matter what. Even when you rain reality on them, they will prove to you that there is no evil in the world. In a show that engages the audience, prepare to say goodbye to resentment, depression and Cipralex and embrace positivity, if only for a short moment.

8.15pm,9.15pm, 10pm & 10,45pm: Vertigo 20 – Dance – also  (Ilona and Hillel Zvi Lauy Reading Rooms, Lobby, Floor 0)

Listen to the ticking of the clock. If you follow it, you will find a group of dancers deciphering the secret of time in a segment from the dance work “Vertigo 20”.

8.45pm: Nightly Story Hour (also 10pm) “The Sandman” by A.T.A. Hoffman (Stephen A. Schwartzman Education Center, Floor 0)

The Sandman, a folklore character who brings sleep to children and sprinkles sand in their eyes, was taken by A.T.A. Hoffman, one of the greatest German writers, and turned into the focus of a chilling and unforgettable horror story, which has long since become a classic. On the 250th anniversary of Hoffman’s birth, return to his masterpiece, “The Sandman,” which became Freud’s great inspiration.

9pm & 9.45pm: Wandering in Analog Space (William Davidson Permanent Exhibition Hall, Floor 0)

Listen, wander and surrender to an open stream of consciousness, woven in real time from sounds produced by an analog system (Buchla) based on primitive electronic technology. Live performance by Omer Harshman, musician and producer, who explores the field of analog music as part of the Waking States project, which draws inspiration from the pioneers of electronic music of the 60s and 70s.

9.15pm & 10.15pm: Michael – Literary Spring Remembrance (Joel Nathan Heller and Tzipora Gottsfeld Heller Lending Services Desk, 1st floor)

The family of the late Michael comes to “Migdalor” to continue spreading his light to the masses. His mother Rivka, his uncle Dovi, his sister Yasminish and his best friend Peleg will bring back memories through the books that Michael especially loved, through which his unforgettable character will be reflected. 9.30pm & 10.15pm: Gon Ben Ari and the “Zolat” Choir Take Over the Reading Room (Ilona and Hillel Zvi Lauy Reading Rooms, 2nd Floor)

In honor of Migdalor, Gon Ben Ari, the band and the choir will come to a special and one-time performance at the National Library with the new album and with the hopes of rising from darkness to light.

9.45pm: The Ultimate Villain – Darkest Literary Character Competition (Seminar Rooms, 2nd Floor)

Four people of Mila have chosen their ultimate literary villain. Now they have to convince Yermi Schick Blum – and you – that there is no lower and darker than him. Vote and influence this year’s literary battle! Participants: Shimon Adef, Mandy Grozman, Neta Hotar, Dafna Lustig Moderator: Yermi Schick Blum

10pm & 11pm: An Immersive Experience of Sound and Form (Younes and Soraya Nazarian Library Experience Center, Floor 0)

Surrender to a deep listening experience, while watching an immersive video art work on a giant screen. With the arrival of spring, come and flow into a different state of aggregation and emerge from the other side of a blooming world – sitting or lying down, between darkness and light. It’s written in the stars – all evening long (2nd floor lobby)

On a bright evening where the stars are revealed and the spirits whisper – an astrologer, numerologist and tarot card reader will answer your hidden question and give you a direction reading. Participating: Naama Noah (Tarot), Aviva Regev (Numerology), Dima Gur (Astrology)

Marky Funk All Night (Alef Restaurant, 2nd Floor)

Collector and DJ Marky Funk returns with a set of records. As usual, there will be hidden gems – from here and there.

11pm: Closing Performance: Giraffes (David Geffen Auditorium, Floor 0)

The Giraffes band comes to close “Migdalor” with all the favorite hits: “I Have a Hole in My Heart the Way You Dream”, “Whoever Doesn’t Dream is Angry”, “Roof”, “Wow”, “Rami Is Accused of Possessing Soft Drugs”, “No Entry for Elephants”, “The Most Beautiful at the Disco”, “Bad Party” and more. Between songs, Giraffes will improvise as always and turn our turbulent everyday lives into one-off songs.
