Ammunition Hill

“This looks just like the shooting spots in my Playmobil castle” AZ, Age 5

On a hot afternoon the week before Yom Yerushalayim, we took our kids to Ammunition Hill. As a bonus, in the front lobby the kids were able to see the soldiers practicing for their Jerusalem day “tekes” (ceremony). Because of the heat we started off in the underground museum which was nice and cool. Having learned in gan about the battle for Jerusalem, my son was really excited to see the movie and the pictures from the 6 Day War. Ammunition Hill was a key battle ground in the war and from the top of the mountain you can see why…there are 360 degree views of Jerusalem.Ammunition_Hill3small

The movie was a bit of a disappointment because it took a while to get it to start and it captured his 5 year old attention for about 5 minutes. My 2 year old enjoyed the cool air and climbing on the theater style seats. There was no one around to complain, so we let him climb. After the movie AZ ran around the museum in delight finding pieces of old ammunition and tanks.

By the time we came out of our underground refuge, the heat had started to subside. The boys crawled into the maze of bunkers which provided at least an hour of fantasy play finding the “shooting spots” “hiding spots”  “bridges” and “tunnels”. I was able to stay on the top and follow them around while giving them the feeling that they were crawling through on their own. I even pushed the stroller around as I watched them.

We stopped for a quick picnic dinner under a beautiful olive tree and then started our hunt for the gazlan, the man who sells popsicles (ice lollies).  This was the perfect tiyul for the week before Jerusalem Day. It was a 15 minute drive from Katamon and a nice place to let them burn some energy. There was a free parking lot right next to the exit and everything was stroller accessible.
