Machane Yehuda "The Shuk"
Machane Yehuda is located between Jaffa St and Agrippas and has been around since 1928. The Market is filled with produce stalls, fresh fish, meat, nuts, cheese, spices and even Halva. The Market is filled with beautiful colors and an array of fresh food smells. The variety and good prices bring the large crowds especially on a Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. Taking your children to the Shuk will be a real “Chavaya” (experience) especially when they see the candy stalls.
The Shuk hosts the Jerusalem Culinary Festival in March and also has a nice selection of restaurants. Many well known stores have opened on the outskirts of the shuk to take advantage of the crowds of people. Some of the most well know shops include:
Marzipan: Bakery known around the world for its delicious rougelach. This is always a kids favorite spot.
Natural Bakery: Located on Agrippas across the street from the Shuk this bakery boasts spelt, rye and whole wheat cakes, bread and challah. There are gluten free and dairy free baked goods as well.
Kippa Man: Known for his selection of kippas, the Kippa man has his main store in the center of town. The Machane Yehuda store also has a good selection of knitted kippot with traditional Israeli designs, US Sports teams and colorful whimsical kippa designs. It is a definite stop for tourists with kids.
Tzidkiyahu: Tzidkiyahu is known for its salatim and olives and also sells appetizers like Morocan Cigars and Yerushalmi Kugel. Located in the covered section of Machane Yehuda near Agrippas.
Dovid Dagim: The freshest fish in town.
Teller’s Bakery:Known for its delicious chalah and breads.
Basher’s Cheese & Wine: Daniel recommends Basher’s Cheese and Wine Emporium. If you ask the owner to explain to you the “ins and outs” of cheese, it is the most fascinating tour of the dairy world ever. Keep in mind that not all of their cheeses are kosher.
Rachmu: Recommended By Yael K. is a truly authentic restaurant with traditional middle eastern style food, and as her 5 year old daughter Yuval says החומוס שלהם ממש טעים
