Kid Friendly Restaurants in Jerusalem

Jerusalem is full of delicious food but the most delicious steak or pasta dish just can’t be enjoyed if your kids are nagging you that they want to go home or if the waitress gives you the evil eye because you’ve brought your kids to dinner with you.  There are great restaurants that are worth getting a babysitter for but this post is about the places you can feel comfortable taking your kids to. Thanks to the Fun In Jerusalem facebook group for sharing info and their opinions on their favorite places to eat with their kids.

These are the Jerusalem Restaurants that have the Fun In Jerusalem readers’ seal of “kiddie” approval. Feel free to add your comments about the following places or other places we should add to the list.

Meat Restaurants

Avazi: 14 Yad Hacharutzim 02-672-6067

Few people think of Talpiot as a place to eat out but the best “Al Haesh” (On the Grill) restaurants are there. For those of you who are visiting, Talpiot is just on the other side of Baka and the German Colony. Avazi is a delicious restaurant that welcomes kids with open arms. They have a kids menu with kids portions and they even bring small gifts to the table during the meal. They are open till 12:00pm for those of you who like to sleep on full meat stomachs. (Thank you to Justin for the information) Kashrut: Rabbanut Yerushalayim. Bus Route 21

Herzog 61: 61 Herzog at Nayot Junction 02-648-1625

At Herzog 61 your family can sit together while each member eats from one of the 4 restaurants; Burgers Bar, Hashamen, Rachmo and Wok N Roll. This is across the street from the Botanical Gardens and a new playground worth visiting in Nayot. Kashrut: Beit Yosef. Bus Route: 32

Tzidkiyahu: 21 Yad Hacharutzim 02-673-3379

When it comes to Al Haesh (On the Grill) Tzidkiyahu is famous for its meat and its portion sizes. If your kids are starving and you want to make sure you will get served quickly this is the place to go. Within two minutes of ordering we had fresh warm pita and a selection of 8 salads on our table. The freshly grilled chicken and meat followed within 5 minutes. The salads are refilled as needed and the waiters wont give your kids the evil eye. Just make sure to bring your own crayons. Kashrut:Mehadrin, Beit Yosef. Bus: 12, 14

McDonalds: Avizohar St, Ramat Beit Hakerem & Harel Mall, Mevaserret

Treat your kids to a tradiional happy meal at one of the local kosher McDonalds. You can find them in Ramat Beit Hakerem across the street from Shaarei Tzedek and in the Mevasseret Mall.

Milk Restaurants

Samne: 16 King George St 02-502-0054

Samne is a new Dairy Teimani Restaurant in the center of town just below the Mashbir. The food is served cafeteria style and there is plenty of outdoor seating. Kids can enjoy their fresh pizza, sandwiches and delicious fresh bread called Saluf. This recommendation is brought to us by Liat whose husband took her kids there and had a blast. Open Sunday – Thursday: 10:30 am-7:00 pm. Friday 10:30 am-2:30 pm Kashrut: Rabbanut Yerushalyim. (Thank you to Liat for the information.) Bus Route: 4, 14, 22 Center of Town

Tal Bagels: 64 Emek Refaaim 02-566-6666

This is a local and tourist favorite. The bagels taste like they are made in NY and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. The menu includes salads, pastas and some of the best desserts in town. The waitresses will often bring kids some paper and crayons for coloring and there are many items on the menu suitable for kids. If you ask nicely they will even let you play with the cows inside the dairy case. Kashrut: Kosher LeMehadrin. Bus Route 4, 4A

Luigis: 36 Shai Agnon (corner of Maale Zeev in San Simon/Katamon) 02-563-3338

Luigi’s is a well known Italian restaurant in town that recently opened up a second branch in San Simon on Shai Agnon. The food is Italian Milky and delicious. The reason it is so great for kids is because they have a large fenced in grassy area with children’s toys including a slide, playhouse and see saw. They will have a kids menu very soon. For now they have yummy fruit shakes, pizza and pasta favorites for kids. Luigi’s has my vote for the easiest place to take kids. Kashrut: Rabbanut Yerushalayim, Gush Katif. Bus Route: 22

Topolino: 62 Agrippas St 02-622-3466

Topolino is located just outside the Shuk and takes advantage of the Shuk’s fresh produce and fish. It is a dairy restaurant that will give you the feeling of being in Rome (with a view of the Shuk). It is clean, warm and laid back. The menu changes according to the availability of food in the shuk and the cuisine is good for adults and kids. Keep in mind this is a small restaurant so it is not a good choice for a large family gathering. Kashrut: Rabbanut Yerushalaim. Bus Route: 18, 20 Eluna coupon is available. (Thank you to Yael for the information.)

Ye Olde English Tea Room: 6 Rechov Hillel 02-625-0301 As of Dec 2009 this restaurant has closed!

This is an old time Jerusalem favorite that has recently reopened. In the tea room you will find a real ”English” menu which includes an extensive kids menu like fish ‘n chips, Boss the Chef Around Sandwhich and scones. There is a life size doll house with a miniature tea service for kids to play with. On Fridays they offer special French Toast, Pancakes and Marmite. This is not only a delicious restaurant but a true “English Experience.” Kashrut: Rabbanut Yerushalayim Bus Route: 4, 4A, 21 ELuna coupon is available. (Thank you to Gaby for the information.)
